Routines
Heat and humidity change how your skin behaves. Oil glands work overtime, sweat mixes with sunscreen and pollution, and heavier creams that felt comfortable in winter can suddenly feel greasy and pore-clogging. The goal in summer isn't to do more - it's to swap a few products for lighter versions and stay consistent with the one step that matters most: sun protection.
You don't need a ten-step routine to see results. A focused four-step routine, done daily, will outperform an elaborate one you only follow half the time.
Cleanse with a gel or foaming face wash that removes overnight oil without stripping skin - a tight, squeaky-clean feeling usually means the cleanser is too harsh for daily summer use.
Treat with a lightweight, water-based serum. Niacinamide is a good year-round pick because it helps balance oil while calming redness from heat and sun exposure.
Hydrate with a gel or lotion moisturiser instead of a thick cream. Skin still needs moisture in summer - going without it can actually trigger more oil production to compensate.
Protect with a broad-spectrum sunscreen, SPF 50 or higher. This is the one step that shouldn't be skipped or swapped, rain or shine.
At night, double cleanse only if you've worn heavy sunscreen or makeup - otherwise a single gentle cleanse is enough. Follow with any treatment actives (like a mild exfoliant a few times a week) and finish with a lightweight night moisturiser. Save richer, ceramide-based creams for when the weather actually turns dry.
Skipping sunscreen reapplication: one morning application won't last through a full day outdoors. Reapply every 3-4 hours if you're outside for extended periods.
Over-cleansing: washing your face more than twice a day strips natural oils and can actually increase oiliness as skin overcompensates.
Switching to heavy, occlusive creams 'just in case': if your skin feels fine with a lighter moisturiser, there's no need to layer on more.
If you're rebuilding your routine from scratch for summer, start with a gentle face wash, a niacinamide serum, a gel moisturiser, and a broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen. That's a complete, dermatologist-reasonable routine - everything else is optional layering once these four are a habit.
